EFM Orientation -- Sept. 29, 2005

 Ø     UPDATE—What was the most significant thing that happened to you this summer?

Ø     HOPES & FEARS—What do you hope to gain from EFM this year?  What fears and concerns do you have about EFM this year?

Ø     EFM SYLLABUS (not final)—Meeting from now until June; Vacations for Christmas & Holy Week; Common lessons;  Field trips? Pre-reformation liturgy?

 Ø     TYPICAL SCHEDULE—

7:00—Opening prayer

7:05—Discuss textbook readings

8:35—Break

8:45—Common lesson

9:15—Closing worship

9:30—Adjourn

 Ø     MENTOR ASSIGNMENTS—Year One—Barbara; Year Two and Three—Alison; Common Lessons—Barbara & Alison will share.

Ø     GROUP COVENANT—Read each item slowly, discuss questions or concerns about each item, are additional items needed?

 Ø     TEXTBOOK—Parallel Guides:  Summary, Learning Objectives, Assignments to Deepen Your Understanding (optional), Preparing for the Seminar (optional), Additional Sources.  Chapters:  Main Text, Section Titles. 

 Ø     BIBLE—Any Bible will do, but it is highly recommended that you get the New Oxford Annotated Bible or another NRSV.  Make sure you get one with the Apocrypha.

 Ø     Common Lessons---

  • Lesson 1:  Spiritual Autobiographies

  • Lesson 2:  Thinking Theologically

  • Lesson 3: Life in Christ

  • Lesson 4:  Theological Frameworks

  • Lesson 5:  Looking to the Future.  We will doing Year D common lessons. 

  • Note:  confusing page number system (e.g. 4-3-1).  First number stands for common lesson, second number stands for year (1=A, 2=B etc.), third number stands for page.

Ø     Worship—Each seminar closes with group worship.  Often, this will be compline, from the BCP or other prayer books.  Other worship formats are allowed.  Take turns leading worship.
